THE "OFFICIAL" COURSE -- AND MORE
WHY TAKE THIS CLASS
This three-day class provides a basic understanding of the CMMI for Development (CMMI-DEV) v1.3 -- the world's leading model for the development of software-intensive systems. The focus is on the content of the model -- i.e., what's inside of the CMMI.
In our delivery of this class, we also provide you with a true appreciation of the model. We'll give you examples and practical implementation guidelines -- not part of the "official" course. (See our example slides and award-winning Process Improvement Lessons Learned presentation.)
WHO SHOULD ATTEND
This class is required to serve on formal CMMI appraisal teams, and should be attended by:
- Anyone involved in CMMI-based improvement initiatives (e.g., members of Engineering Process Groups).
- Candidate appraisal team members, regardless of the appraisal's level of formality. (A typical appraisal team is composed mostly of your own employees. See pages 81-85 of the SCAMPI Method Definition Document for guidance on selecting team members.)
- People wanting to take other courses for which this is a pre-requisite (e.g., Services Supplement for CMMI).
- Anybody else interested in learning more about the CMMI. Several executives of small-to-medium-sized companies have attended our class, to ensure they realize what their company might be getting into. (We believe that's an excellent idea!)
WHAT YOU'LL LEARN
By the end of the course, you should be able to:
- Understand exactly what it means to be Maturity Level 2 or 3... and beyond.
- Discuss each of the 22 process areas in the model (Requirements Development, Project Planning, etc.)
- Describe the components of the CMMI (goals, practices, required vs. expected components, etc.) and how they work together
- Know where to find information in the model
- Know how to get started!
WHO TEACHES IT
This class can only be delivered by an instructor certified by the CMMI Institute. In our company, all training is conducted by CMMI Institute-Certified Instructor Bill Smith.

NEW!! "Learner Centered" Approaches!
In a unique collaboration with the CMMI Institute, we're piloting new ways of engaging our students during Introduction to CMMI classes. During 2014 and 2015, we're rolling out new activities and more dynamic, visually powerful slides -- to enhance your experience, but more importantly to increase the amount of information you actually retain from class.
We started this -- just a bit -- with our December 2012 class. Take a peek at the results of our student survey on the new things we tried -- proof that we not only talk about continuous improvement, we practice it! |
